Women, the key players in achieving sustainability

Women, the key players in achieving sustainability

Gender equality is one of the most relevant aspects of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) corporate policies, given that it affects both the social and governance aspects.

In the social sphere, issues such as personnel selection and promotion, diversity management, inclusion or the salary gap are addressed and, in the governance sphere, mainly the presence of women in positions of responsibility is dealt with.

Today, there is no longer any doubt that well-managed diversity has an impact on profits and many organisations are implementing policies aimed at overcoming the structural barriers of the “old” organisational cultures and combating the false beliefs that today there are no more gender inequalities, that treatment is equitable and the justification that differences are due to women’s personal decisions.

In this respect, the figure of the latest winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics should be highlighted. The American Claudia Goldin has been a pioneer in the study of the gender gap from a historical perspective.

The analysis of historical data has allowed Goldin to conclude that the wage gap is an issue that goes beyond the enactment of laws and more investment in education, all of which are necessary but not sufficient measures. It requires a cultural change. Goldin argues, not without reason, that an organisational culture that is against flexible working, for example, has a direct impact on women’s work life decisions.

It is clear, therefore, that diversity is a prerequisite for achieving sustainability. And that the search for and management of diversity is one of the traits of feminine leadership, which is more humanistic and inclusive when it comes to exercising it. Leadership that is transformational and cooperative. And that if talent and diversity are two fundamental aspects for any organisation to be sustainable and solid, women are the main protagonists in achieving sustainability.
