30 Jan We celebrate the European Data Protection Day
We celebrate the European Data Protection Day “28 January” by recommending two of the most interesting and best-selling readings on PRIVACY:
- PRIVACY IS POWER, Why and how you should take back control of your data, de Carissa Véliz i,
- THE AGE OF SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM, The fight for a human future at the new frontier of power, de Shoshana Zuboff
“From the moment you check your phone in the morning you are losing privacy. Corporations around the world are recording what time you wake up, where you slept, how well you slept, and with whom. Whithout your permission, or even your knowledge, tech companies are harvesting your data, your location, your likes, your habits, your fears, your diseases, your politics, and sharing it amongst themserlves. They are not selling your data. They are selling the power to influence you, and everyone you know”
We join in these authors’ defence of privacy. Because without privacy there is no guarantee of equality, justice, freedom or democracy. Because who we are and what we do is nobody’s business. We are citizens and we are owed privacy. It is a Fundamental Right and respecting privacy is a guarantee that the system will treat us impartially and fairly. And we all need to work together, as citizens and within organisations, to promote a culture of privacy based on conviction and not on sanction. Because respect for privacy builds trust, and shared trust is synonymous with protection. And only in this way can we make the digital future a home for humanity.
